Our clients purchased this large suburban home while still living in Connecticut, with plans to relocate to Wisconsin within a few months. The house needed significant remodeling before they would be ready to move their family into their new home. We worked efficiently throughout the design and build process to ensure that a majority of the construction was complete prior to the move in day.

First on the list was a new kitchen. While functional, the existing kitchen featured dark oak cabinets and dropped soffits, typical of many 1970’s houses. It felt cold, and did not allow for more than one person to work comfortably. The family was looking for something brighter, utilizing modern materials and design ideas – something still functional, but appropriate for the family to live and work in.

We removed the dark oak cabinets and the soffits, replacing them with lighter maple cabinets. Varied cabinet heights break up the “box-feel” of the kitchen, are interesting and efficient. The wall between the kitchen and family room was also removed, along with two built in entertainment centers. This connecting of rooms creates a feeling of spaciousness and encourages easy interaction in the areas used most by all.

The island with snack bar at the kitchen’s center provides a convenient work and social area as well as an attractive centerpiece to the kitchen. We created more space between the island and the main countertops. This, along with the subtle relocation of appliances in our design, creates a kitchen that allows multiple cooks to work, and provides room for the family to share time with each other.

All electrical wiring and circuits were upgraded to meet current code requirements. In addition, new recessed can lighting and under cabinet task lighting was added to keep the work areas well illuminated. Tasteful accent lighting was added above the cabinets and inside glass doors to create a feeling of warmth and comfort. Engineered quartz countertops by Zodiaq were chosen for both their look and durability. The stainless steel under mount sink and faucet compliment the contemporary look of the countertops and accents the other appliances as well as the cabinet hardware. High quality Willsonart laminate flooring completed the project.  While providing the look and feel of natural wood, it is more durable and longer lasting – definitely needed for a home full of children and pets!

The new kitchen has everything our cross country family wanted: A new, bright, look and feel; ample space for storage and food preparation; and most importantly, room for the family to spend quality time together.
